가산명사 vs. 불가산명사 - 무식하면 영어 잘한다!

무식하면 영어 잘한다! 혼동을 자주 불러일으키는 가산, 불가산 명사를 학습할 때는 가장 그럴듯한 예문을 하나 외우는 것이 좋은 방법이다. 특히 자주 혼동이 되는 가산명사의 경우, give me a discount. 와 같이 부정관사와 함께 외우는 것이 효과가 있다. 좀 단순무식하게 공부할 필요가 있다.

불가산 명사     information, access, advice, baggage, equipment, luggage, machinery, news, stationery,  weaponry

Ex) we don’t have information on what is going on there.

Ex) she was given access to her children this week.

Ex) He gave a piece of advice for her promotion. 왜 a piece of 같은 수식어를 붙이느냐고.. 한참 고민한 분들도 많을 텐데, advice를 강제적으로 가산명사화 시키기 위해 a piece of를 사용하는 것이다. 하지만 잘 이해가 안 되는 것은 여전하자. 왜 정보(information)은 a piece of 와 같은 수식어를 붙일 수 없을까. 아래 링크를 클릭해서 개념을 잡자.

Ex) An airport worker loading baggage in Gim-hae got locked inside the cargo

Ex) They increased transportation equipment up to 100.

Ex) unclaimed luggage at airports
Ex) that’s just not good news. 이 부분도 조심하셔야 한다. 우리가 생각할 때는 ‘한편의 뉴스’로 해석이 되지만 news는 불가산명사에 속한다.

Ex) They include everything from Todai glasses to hand-made stationery.

Ex) The defense secretary announced his plan to increase heavy weaponry.

아래 명사들은 셀 수 없는 것처럼 보이지만 가산명사(可算名詞)에 해당한다. 이런 명사들을 외울 때

는 반드시 앞에 부정관사를 붙여서 함께 표현하는 연습해야 한다. 예를 들어, give me a discount 와 같이 익히

는 연습이 필요하다. 

 

 

가산명사

A discount, a price, a purpose, a refund, a relation, an approach, a statement, a source, a result, 

belongings, measures, savings, standards, funds 

Ex) give me a discount: 이 표현은 그대로 외우고 있으면 유용하게 쓸 뿐만 아니라, discount 가 가산명사임을 함께 확인할 수 있다.

Ex) they won’t have a price printed on them.

Ex) All of those attachments that come with your vacuum actually do have a purpose.

Ex) would you give me a refund

Ex) a relation between participants

Ex) an approach that has divided Democrats and fueled Republican criticism.

Ex) deliver a statement
