응용의 영어학(1) take A into consideration 조금만 응용을 하면 이전에 보지 못한 새로운 세계를 볼 수 있는데 다들 문벅책에 나오는 표현들만 외우다 보니 그 경험을 하지 못하는 경우가 많습니다. take A into consideration 이 대표적인 표현입니다. 이 구문의 경우, take 와 into consideration 사이에 오는 A 의 존재를 눈치채는 것이 핵심입니다. 여기서는 A 를 고려하다, A를 고려대상에 놓다.. 의 의미입니다. 이 확장된 표현을 알지 못하고, 그냥 take into consideration 의 표현에만 익숙한 경우가 많으며, 더 문제가 되는 것은 take into consideration 은 표현은 고사하고 consider 의 의미에 만족하고 있는 경우입니다. 하지만 이러한 경우, 어느 지점을 넘어서면 한계에 부딪히게 됩니다. 어떤 문법책의 경우, take into consideration 의 의미는 잘 설명해 놓지만, take 와 into 사이에 A 가 들어가서 더 다양한 의미를 만들어 낸다는 사실은 생략된 경우가 많습니다. 할말은 많으나 다 표현하지 못하는 난감한 상황을 맞게 되지요. 아래 예문을 봅시다.

Ex) Soo-young’s boyfriend failed to take her emotions into consideration for the party.

Ex) I have to take that into consideration.

위 예제 2)번의 경우 I have to consider that. 으로 변환이 가능하겠지요.

 

ex) As you begin to plan your will and last wishes, you may wonder what you need to take into consideration when deciding who should get what.

Ex) we must take into consideration a new approach which we have never tried so far.

이 경우엔 into 뒤의 목적에에 해당하는 부분이 너무 길어지기 때문에 그냥 into 뒤로 가져가는 것이 편합니다. 하지만 원리는 언제나 take ~ into consideration 이 맞습니다.

 

위에 보이는 확장된 표현들은.. 여러분들이 영어를 계속적으로 접하다 보면, 어느 순간에 그 필요성을 절감하게 됩니다. 지금 당장이야.. 그냥 take into consideration 면 만사형통일 것 같지만.. 나중에 알게 됩니다. 그러니까 지금부터 그 구조를 잘 파악해 놓으세요.

여기에 한가지 더 응용을 하자면, consideration 명사 앞에 형용사를 붙임으로써 더욱 다양한 표현을 만들어 낼  수 있습니다. 이 부분은 이전에 학습한 동사구 파트와 관련이 있습니다.

We have to take into serious consideration ~

이와 같은 구조를 가진 또 다른 중요한 표현이 바로 take A for granted 입니다.

Ex) They want to know just all the little everyday things that we take for granted in loving one another and in knowing one another.

Ex) Though we take such characteristics for granted in today’s literature.

take A into example 역시 마찬가지입니다. 모두들 take into example 만 달달달 외두다 보니, 정작 take 와 into 사이에 어떤 대상을 집어 넣는데는 인색합니다. 하지만 검색을 해보시면 take A into example 의 형태로 빈번히 사용된다는 것을 잘 알 수 있습니다.

이 구조를 이해한다면, 위에 보이는 take A into example, take A into consideration 과 같은 구문도 결코 생소하게 느껴지지 않을 것입니다.
