일본 당국, 분쟁 영토에 전투기 급파

일본이 분쟁의 섬에 싸움꾼들을 보내다? 이 무슨 말이란 말인가. 설마 K-1이나 UFC에서 볼 수 있는 파이터들을 보내는 건 아닐테다. 기사본문에 다시 등장하지만 전투기들(fighter jets)을 섬에 보낸다는 의미. 보통 전투기는 줄여서 fighters, 폭격기는 bombers 라고 잘 표현한다.

scramble .. 전투기 등을 긴급 이륙시키다. 설령 긴급히 이륙시키다란 뜻을 모른다고 해도, scramble의 기본 의미가 '재빨리 움직이다'이기에 그 의미를 대략 유추할 수 있다. 최악의 경우 scramble 의 뜻을 모른다고 해도 중국과 영토분쟁을 벌이고 있는 일본이 전투기를 어떻게 할 지는 대충 그림이 그려지지 않는가.

that 의 선행사는 small islands 이다. 관계대명사 that 역시 순차적으로 해석한다. 콤마가 있고 없고는 상관 없다. 일단 순서대로 해석을 하고 본다. 즉, 아래와 같이.

(그런데) 그것은(섬들) 양국이 서로 자기의 영토라고 주장하고 있다.. <정도>로 옮긴다.

~에 대한 분쟁은 dispute over 로 함께 익혀두자. opinion 이 전치사 on가 잘 겹합하는 것과 같은 맥락이다. 이 부분은 만남의 영어학과 이별의 영어학을 한번 읽어 보도록 하자. 

games of cat and mouse 의 의미를 모른다고 가정하자. (잘 모르는 사람들도 많을 터) 물론 고양이와 쥐의 싸움으로 일단 옮기고 다시 해석을 가다듬으면서 유추할 수는 있다만.) 문맥을 놓고 보면 중국 선박들과 일본 배들이 어쩌구 저쩌구하다..로 해석된다. 대충 이렇게 옮기면 되겠다. 톰과 제리 둘이서 만나면 뭘하겠는가.
