correspond to - 익혀두면 유용한 표현들

2013학년도 수능 외국어 영역에서 등장한 표현이다. 일루셔니스트 극장 어쩌구 하면서.. corresponding to 이란 어휘가 나왔던 것으로 기억.

correspond to 낯선 표현은 아니지만, 실생활에서 가장 빈번히 사용되는 표현 중 하나이므로 정확히 그 사용법을 익혀 놓을 필요가 있다. 실제 영어를 잘 하는 사람들도 이 표현을 모르는 경우가 많다. 우리말 ‘~에 해당하다, 일치하다’ 에 해당한다. 예를 들어, ‘X축 A는 Y축 B에 해당한다.’고 할 때, 바로 이 ‘해당하다, 대응하다’ 에 대한 영어표현이 correspond to 이다. 다른 표현을 빌리자면 be equivalent of 로 대체할 수도 있다. 또는 각 페이지 마다 책 주인의 도장이 찍혀있다..고 할 때 역시, The book had codes stamped across every page, each corresponding to the owner's name. 과 같이 표현 가능하다. 이 표현들은 이렇게 학습해 놓지 않으면 쉽게 개념을 잡기가 어려운 단어들이다. 대화를 하다 보면.. ‘~에 해당한다, 부합하다’란 말을 할 때가 많다. 따라서 이 표현은 반드시 숙지해 놓아야 한다. correspond 를 영화에서 한번 찾아보자. 영화 <인디펜던스 데이>에 나오는 거대한 우주선을 상상하면 된다. 거대한 우주선(mother ship)에서 엄청난 규모의 작은 우주선이 쏟아져 나오는 모습을 볼 수 있는데, 바로 모선에 붙어 있는 작은 우주선들을 corresponding ships 라고 한다.

참고로 correspond 동사의 명사형인 correspondent 는 ‘특파원’의 의미로 잘 쓰이다.

Ex) Most teens have their accounts on social networking site, like CyWorld.com

Ex) the contents of the box must correspond to the description on the label. 박스 내용물과 상표 위에 적힌 설명이 일치해야 한다.

Ex) the problem is that what she says doesn’t correspond with what she does. 그녀의 말과 행동이 일치하지 않는다.

Ex) segregation was not compatible with the ideals of America. Be compatible with 는 correspond to 아 함께 익혀 두면 좋다.
